Project Outline

The research conducted by the laboratory will primarily focus on the interrelationship between both technological and social dimensions that make it possible to create what we may call ‘techno-social’ lifeworlds (Chayko, 2014). The broader social context (Campbell, 2012), such as perceptions of creativity (Atkinson, Barker, 2023) and intelligence (Ekbia, 2010), as well as legal systems in communication (Petit, de Cooman, 2022) as they intersect with the development of new technologies, will be central to the research carried out by the laboratory.

The proposed laboratory proceeds from the assumption that the very nature of technological evolution, including platformisation, the development of diverse and comprehensive digital ecosystems, the integration of AI-based assistants and robots, and the transition to voice interfaces, requires the study of these changes using social research methods (Elliott, 2023; Elliott, 2022; Bijker, 2009; Callon, 1994; Latour, Woolgar, 1979).

The perspective of critical media studies, in particular, as one of the fundamental research directions in the field of new technologies, will allow the laboratory to contextualise the rhetoric that has emerged around AI by revealing the social and economic conditions of its development, as well as to examine its perception among broad sections of the public.
