Time has always posed challenges for those who work in the media industry. Such a complex field has a great number of interrelated components – from social change to revolutionary advances in technology.
We suggest taking a look at social processes in a much broader way by studying journalism, media management, directing, editing, the stages of the creative process, and the production cycle of creating a media product – simply put, everything that can be called journalism, media, and communications.

In general, «Rossiyskaya Gazeta» is a modern multimedia holding company that provides high-quality information about significant federal, regional and international events around the clock. Despite the fact that it appeared in 1990, it is still the leader in terms of audience in the segment of socio-political and business newspapers. That’s why its cooperation with students and specialized workshops were such a great experience for the HSE.
The event was opened by Deputy Editor-in-Chief Elena Berezina, who expressed deep gratitude to the students for their remarkable progress.
«You’ve all done an incredible job! You’ve already mastered skills that even some salaried professionals lack. We aimed to show you the publishing house from every angle. It is not just writing and attending events, but video metrics and production too. I’ve always thought that journalism has been a craft. The key is learning to generate ideas and present them effectively. You still have much ahead, like finding meaning in your work, because content shapes people’s minds. I’m so grateful you joined us, and I hope this experience serves you well» – shared by Elena Berezina, Deputy Editor-in-Chief.
Mentors of the course, Yulia Shimarskaya and Oleg Kapranov, also shared warm reflections on the learning process on the programme.
«I’m glad many of you connected not just with journalism but its behind-the-scenes reality», – said Yulia Shimarskaya, the media technologist of the publication. «I hope my pieces of advice were useful and, also, that my colleagues leave you energized, not traumatized! This is emotional for me as you’re our first enrollment. You’re brilliant, and I know you’ll go far».
Oleg Kapranov, the chief editor of the project «Technologies», highlighted: «Those I worked with have grown much. Honestly, it’s even petrifying as they’ll keep progressing even faster now».
Media Institute students recalled the workshop with sincere appreciation. They’ve got unique experience from mastering metrics to networking with industry leaders at forums that contributed to their personal growth. Many highlighted a press trip to Anapa, where they produced stories while immersing themselves in local perspectives. With the help of «Rossiyskaya Gazeta» students not only worked in another city, but explored the mentality of the people. Creating materials as field reporters was also a precious experience.
27 workshop participants were assigned to various editorial departments like politics, economics, film/photo, and marketing. This immersive approach allowed students to develop skills while producing publishable content for both digital and print editions of Rossiyskaya Gazeta. It was a great opportunity for students to immerse themselves in various fields. The work resulted in publications for the website and newspaper.
«The workshop gave us valuable access to the industry's inner workings. Honestly, I can't imagine learning these nuances on any course. Now I have time to reflect on my career path, but journalism still attracts me. Division by departments taught me such crucial skills as crafting presentations and pitching stories that I know will serve me well professionally» – shared Dmitry Flir, a first-year Journalism student.
Participation in this workshop provided an opportunity to assemble a journalistic portfolio that will help students to find employment in the future. In addition, participants can receive an offer and become members of one of the largest and most famous publication houses in Russia.
