Time has always posed challenges for those who work in the media industry. Such a complex field has a great number of interrelated components – from social change to revolutionary advances in technology.
We suggest taking a look at social processes in a much broader way by studying journalism, media management, directing, editing, the stages of the creative process, and the production cycle of creating a media product – simply put, everything that can be called journalism, media, and communications.

Theatre director, the Institute of Media associate professor Zhanna Moskvina and the freshmen of the EP «Journalism» chose the comedy «Frogs» by Aristophanes for their first production. The scriptwriters not only showed audience a play, but also introduced new interpretation of the ancient comedy with a bag from the «Gold apple», which Aphrodite, Hera and Athena were fighting for; with a rap battle between MC Euripides and MC Aeschylus; with «Massoviki.Olymp» advertisement and much more.
«We had been thinking for a long time what exactly we want to stage. We ultimately settled on a comedy, partly because of the educational course called «The history of journalism», which our first-year students started learning recently and which includes topics related to Greece. So we thought that this is a good coincidence,» said Zhanna Moskvina, theatre director and the Institute of Media Assistant professor.
Zhanna Olegovna Moskvina is a newcomer to the institute. She does not only teach academic disciplines but also stages plays in the students' theatre.
«It seems to me that theatre is a magic place where the most secret and incredibly deeply hidden talents of yours might be revealed. And, of course, theatre helps actors to loosen up, theatre allows one to feel themselves more confident and bright. The atmosphere that we try to make behind the stage contributes to the actors' self-perception. This is very useful for future journalists. If they are planning to be engaged in TV journalism, they need to learn how to conduct themselves in front of camera. Nothing can make you feel so comfortable in the most stressful moments the way a skill of performing on a stage does. A play, especially a premiere, is a moment which causes a surge of stress hormones in a human body. You need to be constantly focused not to forget about movements, partner, scenery etc.»
Freshmen decided to support their director and started exploring the university from the theatre. In September 90 freshmen signed up for Zhanna's studio. They've experienced being actors, sound producers, set designers, makeup artists and scriptwriters for the first time.
Freshman Alice Dyachenko, a scriptwriter and a sound producer for the show answered a question about what did she find out about herself while preparing for the performance,
«My work as an organizer: to structure, to distribute people, to look for an approach to them. I was supposed to be everywhere and understand what, where and when everybody should do. I chatted with all of the participants, tried to accept some of their personality traits. Completing these tasks revealed only one of my sides. The other side was revealed by working with sounds. I had to choose suitable music, and then find a way to download it. Moreover, I needed to combine all of these tasks with studying. As a result, I practiced my time-management skilIs. In general, it was a cool experience.»
HSE students, actors' parents and friends and also the head of the Institute of Media Ernest Matskyavichyus attended the premiere. After the performance he gave some advice to the future journalists:
«In our job it is important to expand your emotional range. Sometimes the whole life is not enough to comprehend everything, and such projects help to open up emotionally. What is our main problem? A person become uptight in the frame. He doesn't believe in himself, in his abilities, in the things he's saying. But if you don't believe in yourself, the audience will neither. Remember: audience never believe insecure person.»
Professor of the Institute of Media Grigory Vladimirovich Prutskov, who taught Zhanna Moskvina journalism at MSU, not only came to the performance himself, but also invited his mother Natalia Stepanovna to watch students' staging.
«This evening probably left the most bright and delightful impression for all my work in the Institute of Media. I've been watching students' rehearsals, costumes preparation, scenery making for a month and a half. In such a short time they not just managed to stage a play, but also showed a professional work with vivid stage personas, creative foundings and talented acting. The participants of the action hid the details from me until the last moment, they only said that I needed to stock up on tissues to wipe tears away. This tip turned out to be very useful: I, along with the whole audience, repeatedly roared with laughter. The scriptwriters, directors and actors skillfully drew imaginary bridges from the era of Aristophanes to the present days, inserting into the play phrases that students had heard more than once at lectures, such as «You will get credit!» And in the midst of the performance, the god Dionysus, one of the main characters of the comedy, rushed at my feet with a scream. Years will pass, our students will finish their studies and, gathering on alumni days, they will definitely remember the bright moments of university life, one of which is today’s performance.»
Natalya Stepanovna Prutskova, mother of G.V. Prutskov, said,
«I am absolutely delighted with the performance! On my way here I thought that the students probably would prepare something interesting. They managed to exceed my expectations! My son constantly tells me about how talented those who are studying here. Today I've verified the veracity of these words. Thanks to the young crew and Zhanna Moskvina for a wonderful performance!»
The performance lasted about an hour, and during this time one could hear musical instruments - flute and guitar, enjoy dancing, vocals with accompaniment and acappella, as well as watch the video in which the creators of the play revealed the secrets of the backstage. It was shown at the end of the event.
«Staging a performance in 2 months is magic. With God's help!», said Zhanna Moskvina.
Laugh and applause were accompanying the play from start to finish. At the end there was a standing ovation and enthusiastic shouts of «Bravo!». This production had it all!
Congratulations on their debut! We wish Zhanna Olegova and the students success. We look forward to new productions.
