Time has always posed challenges for those who work in the media industry. Such a complex field has a great number of interrelated components – from social change to revolutionary advances in technology.
We suggest taking a look at social processes in a much broader way by studying journalism, media management, directing, editing, the stages of the creative process, and the production cycle of creating a media product – simply put, everything that can be called journalism, media, and communications.

HSE students have developed a project that helps protect media from legal risks. The team for legal consulting of media projects assists producers, authors, creators - specialists in generating ideas, creators of information products, and representatives of the media business. Now there are 13 participants in the team. Among them are bachelors and masters of the Faculty of Creative Industries and the Faculty of Law, as well as several students from other universities. The project leader is Alena Denisova, a senior lecturer at the Media Institute. What problems can be addressed to the project? The team of consultants will help to understand the issues of intellectual property protection, personal data, business reputation, the intricacies of media and advertising laws. The project also provides private consultations.
How did the need to address legal issues arise? Polina Fokina, a first-year master's student at the Media Institute, says that several factors played a decisive role: personal interest, requests from friends and acquaintances in the media sphere, and the circumstances of the time, where media law norms change frequently. "I asked myself: where should I go if I encounter a problem of this kind? Parsing laws and decrees takes time, you need skill. I would like someone to explain in human language how to act," comments Polina Fokina. - The need for such a project was suggested by the fact that Alena Denisova often helps student (and not only) projects at HSE with legal issues. I wanted to create an interested team that would be able to help others and develop the industry".
The guys don't have many cases yet, but the project is gradually gaining momentum. The more so because they consult for free, and they can be approached even for projects that are not affiliated with HSE. "We've had people come to us for private consultations on legal risks, people have come to us on copyright issues and the use of materials in the project. I won't name the projects themselves, we carefully keep the confidentiality of all those who contact us, and we tell about cases only by permission," comments Polina Fokina.
