From December 11 to January 18, 2015 works by Protei Tyomen and Maria Smirnova, teachers at the HSE School of Design, and by some of their students will be on display in the Images of Museums exhibition at the Moscow Museum of Modern Art (MMOMA).
The exhibition presents a surprising and unorthodox approach to describing museums as artistic institutions through the museum’s staff cloakroom and their clothes which reflect a composite image of the place.
The curator Alexei Maslyaev asked the artists to interpret the museum staff’s cloakroom. At the exhibition the artists present their vision of the museum worker’s uniforms, items of clothing, details and samples of cloth.
Articles of museum staff’s clothing play the same role as works of art - they transfer a hidden cultural message.
The outward appearance of museum employees gives a clear indication of the cultural strategy and social function chosen by the museum and of the way it communicates with visitors and with artifacts in the museum.
The exhibition is in the Moscow Museum of Modern Art at 9, Tverskoi Boulevard and on the 4th floor (3rd English style) at the Tsvetnoi Univermag department store at 15, Tsevtnoi Boulevard.
